Assertion 7.5: Evolution is unfalsifiable, and therefore unscientific.
Analysis:
(i) First, there are a number of discoveries that could have been made in the past that would have falsified evolution. For instance, if the fossil record had contained a haphazard chronological distribution of fossils of varying complexity, that would have made the development of evolutionary theory impossible to begin with. Likewise, if human beings had been found to have a genetic code based on chemical radically different than that of the great apes, the idea of common ancestry between the two would have been permanently put to rest. Second, the discovery of a fossil elephant in Precambrian rock strata, for instance, could falsify evolution even today.
(ii) It is also worth noting that creationism is unfalsifiable as far as the average practicing creationist is concerned. The average creationist assumes that his interpretation of his favorite religious text is infallible, and then proceeds to distort or deny any evidence from the natural world that contradicts that interpretation.
